Katelyn Vanderlaan made her boxing debut when she was 12 years old. Although she was registered as a recreational member at first, she switched to competitive at 13 and had her first bout in March 2014. When she was younger, Katelyn was very shy, self-conscious and didn’t have many interests that inspired her. Her sister’s soccer coach recommended to try boxing, which she did at the current boxing club that offered 101 boxing classes for youth. From the start, she loved the challenge that it represented as it was different from any other sport she had tried and it gave her a lot of confidence.
She loves the fitness required from this sport. Since it is an individual sport, all results depend on the efforts put in and how far one pushes its limits. According to Katelyn, boxing requires a lot of dedication and it brings her many skills that are transferrable to other aspects of her life.
Beside boxing, Katelyn will graduate from High School with Honours and will go to university this fall. In the future, she would like to work in the scientific or medical field and would like to remain involve in boxing, either as an athlete or as a coach.
