10 female boxers will participate in the 3rd edition of the International Boxing Tournament “Balkan”

For the third edition of the International Boxing Tournament ”Balkan”, Boxing Canada is proud to announce the female boxers who will participate in the competition that will take place October 18th – 22nd in Sofia, Bulgaria. Organized by the Bulgarian Boxing Federation, this women boxing tournament regroups Youth and Elite boxers. Here are the ten Canadians who will compete:

The Canadian delegation will be accompanied by coaches João Carlos Barros and Jill Perry, along with Robert Schinke (sport psychologist), Jean-Paul Raphaël (therapist) and Ève Crépeau (nutritionist).  Moreover, AIBA 1-Star official Lyla Simon will also partake in the competition as a Canadian referee and judges.

 

“This tournament will be a great opportunity for the Youth boxers to watch and learn from the more experienced Elite boxers.” affirms Daniel Trépanier, Boxing Canada’s High Performance Director. “It will be the first competition for the Women’s National Team since their success at the Continentals and I am confident that our boxers are well-prepared coming into this tournament.” Indeed, back in June, all seven women who participated in the AMBC Continental Championships in Honduras made it all the way into the finals, which unprecedented!

 

The general weigh in and the official draw will take place on October 18th, 2017. Although the competition will not be available on live streaming, you can follow our boxers’ progression on our WEB PAGE for the event as well as our social media platforms (FACEBOOK PAGE  &  TWITTER) as information will be updated throughout the tournament. 

 

 

Success for the Canadian delegation at the 5th edition of the Celtic Box Cup

Hosted in the seaside town of Dungarvan, County Waterford, the Celtic Box Cup, was held from September 29th until October 1st, 2017.  The fifth edition of Ireland' premier Olympic boxing event regrouped competitors from across the globe to compete for the prestigious trophy. It was the first time that Team Canada took part in the competition and the Canadian delegation made sure to leave a lasting impression in Ireland!

Here's the six boxers who represented Canada at the Celtic Box Cup:

Five out of the six Canadian representatives acceded to the finals in the hope to claim the prestigious trophy in their respective weight categories. However, Thomas Blumenfeld was the only Canadian boxer to come out victorious with a 4-1 split decision over Irish boxer Stephen McKenna while the other boxers lost in close decisions over their opponents, still claiming silver in their divisions. Moreover, Thomas Blumenfeld was also awarded the prize for Best Boxer of the tournament!

Overall, the tournament was a great experience for our Canadian boxers who claimed 1 gold medal as well as 4 silvers.

Celtic Box Cup

Ireland’s premier Olympic boxing event takes place from the 29th September to the 1st October 2017. Hosted in the seaside town of Dungarvan, County Waterford, the Celtic Box Cup sees competitors from across the globe compete for the prestigious trophy.

Great success for Team Canada against Team Mexico at the Melee Gala & the United Boxing Classic

Team Canada collected seven victories out of ten bouts against Team Mexico last week over the course of two events organized by the United Boxing Club: the Melee Gala and the United Boxing Classic. The Melee V Gala took place at the upscale Metropolitan Entertainment Centre on Thursday, September 7th while the United Boxing Classic was held at the Radisson hotel on Saturday, September 9th.

With six international bouts on the cards, here are the results of both events.

MELEE V Gala - September 7th

First held in 2013, the Melee Gala dinner has quickly established itself as one of the most anticipated dates on any sports fans’ calendars and the fifth edition of the Melee Gala was nothing short of spectacular compared to its previous editions. The event featured the United Boxing Corporate Challenge, where white collar competitors are put through an intensive 12-week boxing training leading to their first bout, and will be followed by six international Olympic-style bouts between Canada and Mexico.

While both teams offered great entertainment, the Canadian team game out victorious with five wins over six bouts!

18 year-old Eric Basran was awarded the prize for "Best Bout" along with a $1000 donation for personal and professional development, a fund issued in honour of John O’Shea, former President of Boxing Canada. Also, Caroline Veyre won the prize for "Best Boxer" of the evening.

Moreover, Alexis Barrière's competition gloves were auctioned off after the event and the funds were donated to Variety, the Children' Charity.

United Boxing Classic - September 9th

Following the success of the first competition against Mexico, Team Canada had the chance to rematch two days later at the first edition of the United Boxing Classic. For the occasion,  four Canadian athletes were featured on the card as 69 Kg Joshua Frazer and 91+ Kg Alexis Barrière were unfortunately unable to participate in the second event due to injuries incurred during the Melee gala.

75 Kg Triston Brookes received the prize for "Best Bout" of the evening while Eric claimed a second prize for "Best Boxer" of the card.

Eric Basran and Caroline Veyre both leave Winnipeg with two wins in as many bouts while Joshua Frazer, Triston Brookes and Alexis Barrière claimed one win over their Mexican opponents. 

The United Boxing Classic (Canada vs Mexico)

Following the MELEE at the Met, the United Boxing Classic a rematch between Team Canada vs Team Mexico. The boxing cards also features talented boxers from Manitoba. Doors will open at 6pm and the matches start at 7pm.

MELEE AT THE MET V

TEAM CANADA VS TEAM MEXICO

 

The Melee Gala is one of Winnipeg’s most entertaining annual charitable events. Melee V will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at the upscale Metropolitan Entertainment Centre and will feature the Corporate Challenge bouts, followed by international Olympic style boxing between Team Canada and Team Mexico! You may have attended live boxing events before, but you’ve never seen anything like this! 

 

This year, Variety, the Children’s Charity, will be the recipient of proceeds from Melee V. The organization raises funds to meet the needs of children of all abilities in the province of Manitoba.

5 – 0 at the Women’s World Championships : A first for Canada

Two days into the competition, our Canadian boxers are shinning in all their glory at the 2016 Women’s World Championships in Astana. With a perfect score of 5 victories out of 5 bouts, it is a first in Boxing Canada’s history,

Caroline Veyre was the first to break the ice with a spectacular victory of 3-0 against Martina Schmoranzova (CZE). The 60 Kg Canadian representative can still qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. She will need to finish in the Top 4 in order to punch her ticket for Rio.

The second day was just as exciting, from start to finish. Erica Adjei (54 Kg) kicked off session 3 with a victory of 2-1 against Mariem Homrani (TUN). A few bouts later, the Quebec boxers Sabrina Aubin (57 Kg ) and Sara Kali (64 Kg) respectively claimed a victory with the score of 2-0 and a TKO in 1st round. To conclude this historical debut, Ariane Fortin (75 Kg) convincingly won her bout 3-0 against Shunhyeong Kim (KOR).

It is the first time that Boxing Canada obtains similar results during this major competition. ”We are very pleased with the great start with 5 out of 5 wins in the first 2 days of the world championships. We know this is going to be a tough tournament and the team has prepared for that.” claimed Pat Fiacco, president of Boxing Canada. Three boxers have yet to make their first appearance in the ring. Kim Clavel (48 Kg), Mandy Bujold (51 Kg) and Alison Greey (81 Kg) are scheduled to make their debut over the weekend. Caroline Veyre will also be on Saturday’s card as she will face Maja Saric (CRO) during the second round of preliminaries.
