BIOGRAPHY

Emelia started taking boxing lessons as a recreational sport. She quickly fell in love with the sport and it didn’t take her long before she started competing. She loves the confidence that boxing instills into you. She enjoys training and pushing herself through different challenges. She doesn’t believe there is a perfect boxer, as there is always a skill to improve or add to your repertoire.
Since she started boxing at a young age, her main goal has been to earn a medal at the Olympic Games. She hopes to earn a spot with the Canadian Olympic team by 2024 and to be ready to compete at the 2028 Olympics.
She is currently in her last year of high school. Her next step in education is going to the University of Ottawa to study Human Kinetics.

BIOGRAPHY

When she was 15, Dakota was invited by one of her friends to a boxing club. Because her mother was a kickboxer, Dakota did not hesitate and started practicing boxing. Not only is boxing in her lineage, but she finds that boxing is a great workout and enjoys the challenges.
She believes her future holds a sports psychology degree or becoming a physical trainer. In 2016, she attended Mildura senior college in Australia and was training boxing at the same time. She is currently in high school in her hometown of Nanaimo. The Canadian champion also practices beach volleyball five days per week.

BIOGRAPHY

Katelyn Vanderlaan made her boxing debut when she was 12 years old. Although she was registered as a recreational member at first, she switched to competitive at 13 and had her first bout in March 2014. When she was younger, Katelyn was very shy, self-conscious and didn’t have many interests that inspired her. Her sister’s soccer coach recommended to try boxing, which she did at the current boxing club that offered 101 boxing classes for youth. From the start, she loved the challenge that it represented as it was different from any other sport she had tried and it gave her a lot of confidence. 

 

She loves the fitness required from this sport. Since it is an individual sport, all results depend on the efforts put in and how far one pushes its limits. According to Katelyn, boxing requires a lot of dedication and it brings her many skills that are transferrable to other aspects of her life.

 

Beside boxing, Katelyn will graduate from High School with Honours and will go to university this fall. In the future, she would like to work in the scientific or medical field and would like to remain involve in boxing, either as an athlete or as a coach.

BIOGRAPHY

Charlie Cavanagh picked up boxing at the age of 13 years old as a recreational member. Her father had involved in boxing for years already and she was eager to partake in all sports, especially contact sport. Prior to boxing, she competed in judo for nearly eight years. Although she originally intended to simply enjoy the sport with no intent to fight, the 69 Kg youth Canadian representative is now competing and has already stepped on the podium in a few international boxing competitions. She enjoys being in control as well as the social interactions in the sport.

 

In addition to being an athlete, Charlie is currently finishing High School. She has also taken numerous AP University courses during her high school experience and she will be attending University in the fall of 2018 in the Science faculty. In the long run, Charlie aspires to remain actively involved in boxing while pursuing a career in dentistry.

BIOGRAPHY

At a young age, Matthew played competitive hockey. He had an interest in developing combat skills, so he decided to join a local Muay-Thai club where he trained for two years only as there were no competition offered through thi club. He then decided to join Albion Boxing Club in a nearby town and he immediately fell in love with boxing. He loves the training, traveling and the competition in boxing.

 

Although boxing training requires a team effort, he enjoys the solitary competition. In Matthew’s mind, his success depends mostly on the work he personally puts in. He is dedicated, as he goes to practice and trains every day. He really enjoys traveling and competing nationally and internationally. Out of everything, he mostly cherishes the intensity and bout preparations in boxing.

Before practicing boxing, Jordan Mathieu played hockey for seven years and also occasionally played soccer. Despite his talent for both sports, he was a sore loser which was difficult in team sports. It was at the age of 11 that Jordan made his debut in boxing when one of his friend invited him to train with him and when he was 13 years old, he decided to stop team sports to focus on boxing only. 

 

Jordan really enjoy boxing as he is passionate about physical conditioning and boxing is one of the most demanding sport on this level. He also likes that it is an individual sport where the performances depend on the athlete.

 

Jordan wishes to go to the 2020 or 2024 Olympic Games before making a transition toward professional boxing. Beside boxing, Jordan obtained his diploma at École Secondaire Pointe-aux-Trembles and is currently doing a DEP in cooking.

With not much to do in the small town of St-Clet, Avery decided to sign up to Francis Lafreniere’s boxing gym. He has been enrolled in boxing since 2012 and for the last two years, he has been under the tutelage of coach Jessy Ross Thompson. From a young age, Avery was always a boxing fanatic. He watched boxing bouts profusely and loves to watch boxing movies as well. These two elements led to him being inspired to start boxing. He idolizes Julio Ceaser Chavez and Robert Durant. He enjoys the technical and competitive aspects of combat sports.

 

Duval’s dream is to make the National Olympic Team either in 2020 or in 2024. Afterward, he will pursue a professional career in boxing. The national champion trains six days a week and takes Sundays off to recuperate his body.

BIOGRAPHY

Spencer Wilcox comes from a family of boxers. He practically grew up with a pair of gloves on his hands and he started training at the young age of four. Until the age of eight, he only trained two days per week. Afterward, his training became more intense and had boxing practice 5 or 6 days a week. From an early age, he knew he had talent and he is confident that one day he will be world champion. When he was little, his father would bring him at the boxing gym, so he can observe his older brothers while they trained. The part that he loves the most about the sport is honor and respect that come with the sport.
His life goal is to represent the National Team at the 2020 Olympics. His dream would be to win Olympic Gold for Canada. After that, he will consider becoming a professional boxer as his other dream and goal are to win a WBC Championship. He wishes most of all to have a successful boxing career, so his wife and kids can be comfortable. Wilcox is graduating from high school in 2018 and will be pursuing a collegiate degree.

Satwinder Thind began boxing at the age of 15 when he found a pair of boxing gloves in his uncle’s garage. His brother and himself decided to put them on and to “fight” amicably. He enjoyed boxing right away and decided to join King of the Ring boxing club. Thereafter, he started watching videos of boxers such as Ali, Tyson and Mayweather to get inspired. Satwinder likes how boxing is a physical sport that requires strong mental preparation in order to be a great fighter.

BIOGRAPHY

Tethluach Chuol started boxing when he was only nine years old. His older brother introduced him to boxing by bringing him to Beverly Bronx Boxing. From that point on, he fell in love with the sport of boxing.
As a youngster, Chuol was a humorous and outgoing kid. He says that he always knew deep down that he was going to be great at something in life. After being introduced to boxing, he found that the sport allowed him to express himself in ways that other sports wouldn’t. He took boxing seriously and started competing in tournaments and adding to his experience. He enjoys every bout he is in. Some of his boxing idols include legends of the sport Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and Manny Pacquiao.
In five (5) years, he feels he will be preparing to compete at the 2024 Olympics. Further down the line, he sees himself being a challenger for a World boxing championship. Most recently, Chuol competed at the 2018 Canadian National Championship.
