Phillip Matombo began boxing at 17 after realizing his basketball dream was not going anywhere.
His interest in boxing came from the struggles and the things he has been through. He follows the greats that came before him such as Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray, Mike Tyson, Pernell Weatker, and the list goes on. Reading these’s fighters stories, he learned that boxing is known as a poor man’s sport, and coming from Africa not having anything made him want to work hard to get something for his family and himself. The thing that he loves most about boxing is working hard and seeing his work paying off.
After basketball, he ended up in a boxing gym and on the first day that he did sparring, it was against an opponent who had more experience than him. The coach then came up to him to tell him he was a natural and since that day, he never stopped training and striving to become the best.
Beside his career as an athlete, Phillip graduated High School and is now planning on going to College. In the next 5-10 years, Phillip hopes to be a World Champion in three different weight classes and to be financially stable in order to to help kids and families of his country. He also wishes to pass down his knowledge to these children and to motivate them.
