With the end of the 2024 seasons all athletes are setting their sights on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Boxing Canada will provide a pathway of camps, competitions, and guidance to help them make the journey. For the 2024 National Champions that pathway will begin with National Team activities in in Montreal to assess their skills, optimize their strengths, and minimize their weaknesses.
National Team Coaches Vincent Auclair and Samir El Mais were on site in Sarnia making assessments of each boxer. After completing more than 150 round-by-round assessments El Mais remarked that “the skill level of the athletes at Nationals was some of the strongest we have seen.” Following the competition athletes and their coaches will receive the written supports from the national team staff. Auclair is excited to chart the future course for a talented group of Canadian athletes, saying “Success at the international level isn’t guaranteed simply by being the best in Canada.”
The next international competition opportunities for Canadian Boxers will be dependent on the upcoming World Boxing Calendar, but over the next four years will include the 2025 World Championships, the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the 2027 PanAm Games, and then the 2028 Olympics. High Performance Director Kraig Devlin thinks Canada has an opportunity to repeat the Bronze Medal that Wyatt Sanford won at the 2024 Paris Olympics. “Wyatt and Tammara’s success, after six years of centralization in the National Training Centre, shows that Canadians can win medals at the World-level. The 2024 Nationals provides a new starting point for the next two Olympic cycles and we are confident that Canadian will come home with medals in the future.”
For athletes too young to attend the 2024 Elite and U23 Nationals, the 2025 Junior and Youth and U23 Championships have been announced for May 28-June 1, 2025 in Quebec City as part of the long running Quebec Open tournament run by Boxe Quebec.
