What is Olympic Boxing?
Membership
- How to become a member?
- Register online though the Boxing Canada Membership System. Choose your province, then your type of membership
- Membership “season”
- Memberships are described by Calendar Year (2025, 2026, 2027, etc..). But membership sales begin four months early, and is in effect from the time of purchase until December 31st of the membership year. All memberships are subject to provincial validation. Each province has slightly different operational and legal requirements.
- For Example a 2026 membership:
- Becomes available September 1st, 2025
- Is valid from the time of validation until December 31st, 2026

- What membership is needed?
- Athlete memberships come in several different types, depending on the athlete’s needs. Other types of membership are also available (Coach, Official, Associate, etc…)
- Types of Athlete Memberships
- Â Non-sparring (boxing for fitness; hitting bags, not punching people)
- Recreational
- Sparring (boxing for fitness and competition; involves punching ad getting punched)
- Initiation “Funbox” (8-10 years old)
- Junior A U13 (11, 12)
- Junior B U15 (13, 14 years old)
- Junior C U17 (15, 16 years old)
- Youth U19 (17, 18 years old)
- U23 (19, 20, 21, 22 years old)
- Senior “Elite” 20-39 years old
- Masters 40+ years old
- Â Non-sparring (boxing for fitness; hitting bags, not punching people)
- Novice vs. Open
- Novice = Â fewer than 10 fights
- Open = 10 or more fights
Age Categories
- How do I determine my age category?
- The age of the boxer is determined by their calendar year of birth
- What does that mean?
- Take the current year and subtract the year you were born. This is your boxing age
- If the current year is 2024, and you were born in 2000, your boxing age is 24 (category Elite)
- If the current year is 2024, and you were born in 2008, your boxing age is 16 (category U17)
- Take the current year and subtract the year you were born. This is your boxing age
- What does that mean?
- Can I “compete up” in an older category?
- Only 18 year olds may compete up in U23 or Elite. This should only be done under the guidance of a coach and an understanding of the level of competition

Find a club
- What to look for in a club?
- Certified coaches
- Coaches with whom you have a good rapport
- Close to home or work or school
- Classes that focus on specific skill levels so you can work at your level
- Classes that fit your schedule
- Low turnover of athletes / high rate of re-registration
- If you are interested in competition do they offer a competitive stream? Some gyms specialize in recreational boxing rather than competition

- National Champions at U17, U19, U23, and Elite age categories get:
- Your name will appear on the nationally-identified athlete list
- Your name will appear on the athlete selection dashboard
- Your name will appear on all official documentation of the results of the National Championships (written, web, plaque, etc…)
- You will receive invitations to National team camps appropriate to your age group (subject to any additional selection criteria in the current National Team Program [see below])
- When Boxing Canada has an international competition in your weight class, suitable for your level, you will receive an invitation to participate (subject to any additional selection criteria in the current National Team Program [see below])
