Types of Hosting:

The majority of Canadian Boxing competitions are run at the local level. These are sanctioned (governed, authorized, evaluated…) by their respective Provincial Boxing Organization.

 

 

Boxing Canada has several broad hosting initiatives:

 

National Championships

  • Province-vs-province competition with limited entry. Athletes ranked first in each weight class and category become that year’s National Champion. These events are run through partnerships with the provinces and local clubs.

National Selection Competitions

  • Open competitions specifically to rank athletes for selection to a particular program, tour, or competition. These events are generally run in tightly controlled circumstances to focus on performance.

International Events

  • Goal of one “major” international event hosted in Canada every four years
    • World Boxing World Cup, World Olympic Qualifier
  • Goal of one “minor” international event hosted in Canada per year
    • Targeting World Boxing Challenge Cup, Continental Elite Championships, Continental Youth Championships, Youth World Championships
  • Goal of one international open (inter club) event hosted by a Canadian Club or Organizing Committee per year

National Tournament Series (NTS)

  • Three-to-five day tournaments
  • Junior C, Youth, Elite, Masters, Para(?)
  • May be co-hosted with existing events (example: Brampton Cup, Quebec Cup, Canada Cup, …)
  • Minimum two bouts per athlete
  • Open to International participation
  • Athlete Development activity: Open sparring activities available
  • Officials Development activity: Official Level 3 Testing, Official Level 4 Upgrade (?)
  • Coach Development activity: In-person Coach Evaluation opportunity for IB, CI, CD
  • Starting in 2025: Athletes will earn national points

National Show Series (NSS)

  • Single day events
  • Could include U19, U23, Elite
  • Co-branded with existing events (Melee Gala, etc…)
  • Open to International participation
  • Guaranteed participation of at least three “National Team” athletes
  • Athlete Development activity (example: Club visit(s) for training in the days before event
  • Officials development activity (example: R&J Clinic)
  • Coach Development activity (example: Professional Development activity presented for local coaches by a National Team coach)

Indigenous Tournament Support

  • Events that support indigenous members to compete
  • Could include U15, U17, U19, U23, Elite
  • Co-branded with existing events (Melee Gala, etc…)
  • Open to International participation
  • Support to provide indigenous officials, coaches
  • Support to provide competition equipment (gloves and headgear)
