Boxing Canada decision not to send a team to AIBA World Championships (updated)

Update as of November 11, 2021: AIBA has postponed the Women’s World Championship to March 2022. Boxing Canada will evaluate the situation to make the best decision for our athletes. AIBA’s announcement can be found here.

Boxing Canada has made the decision to not send any team or representatives to the AIBA Women’s World Championships to be held in Turkey from December 6th to the 19th. This follows the decision not to send a team to the AIBA Men’s World Championships that took place from October 24th to November 6th in Serbia.

The safety of our athletes is our priority. Given the limited competitive readiness of our athletes due to the strict Covid measures that have been in place in Canada, Boxing Canada feels that this is the best option for the athletes and the program. Boxing Canada has considered the safety issues in sending athletes to the highest level of international competition against countries who were not subjected to training and competition restrictions comparable to those in Canada.

In addition, given the Covid restrictions in Canada since March 2020, Boxing Canada has cancelled National Championships over the last two years, leading to an absence of selection criteria.

With the National Championships to be held in March 2022, we look forward to getting our athletes back to competition at the highest level.
