Canadian Boxers Shine at World Qualifier 2 in Bangkok, Thailand: McKenzie Wright Secures Victory, Scarlett Delgado Displays Grit

[Bangkok, Thailand, June 1st] – Canadian boxers showcased their resilience and determination at the World Qualifier 2 in Bangkok, Thailand, with Scarlett Delgado and McKenzie Wright leaving their mark in the ring.

McKenzie Wright (City Boxing Club, ON), competing in the 50kg weight division, delivered a commanding performance against her opponent Nina Radovanovic from Serbia. Despite facing an initial setback in the first round, Wright demonstrated resilience and determination, rallying to secure a convincing unanimous decision victory. Coach El-Mais commended Wright’s performance, stating, “McKenzie had an amazing fight. She came back from losing the first round to win the second and the third one unanimously. She stayed calm and effective with her right hand and left hook. She was precise and powerful. Great performance for McKenzie.”

When asked about what was different from her first bout, McKenzie shared that ”This bout was different because my opponent came out really hard and tried to set the tone. I stayed calm and focused and started finding her timing when she was trying to pressure me. I knew the first round was a close, but I just knew I had to stick to my objectives because the tide was starting to turn near the end of the first. I was settling down and finding my shots. For tomorrow’s bout, I expect a busy fight. I know we will both be fighting all heart, but I know I can dig down and secure the win.”

In a closely contested bout, Scarlett Delgado (Destiny Boxing Club, ON) in the 54kg weight division, displayed tremendous grit and determination against her opponent Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg from Mongolia. Despite facing a tough adversary, Delgado delivered a commendable performance, winning the first round decisively. Although she ultimately fell short in the following rounds, Delgado’s ability to adjust and land straight punches showcased her skill and adaptability. The coaching staff praised Delgado’s efforts, stating, “Scarlett had a great performance in this bout. She went on to win the first round 4-1, and she lost the 2nd and 3rd rounds, after being able to adjust and land straight punches. The last round was a closely contested one, and it was a hard-fought bout.”

With her victory, McKenzie Wright emerges as the final boxer from the Canadian team to advance to the finals, scheduled for tomorrow, June 2nd against Mexico. As the competition intensifies, Wright carries the hopes and aspirations of the Canadian boxing team. With a victory she will join Tammara Thibeault (QC) and Wyatt Sanford (QC) at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
