In Memory of Mike Power (“Big Mike”)
Mike Power was a respected leader, coach, and volunteer whose influence helped shape amateur boxing in Ontario for decades. A proud Cape Bretoner, he became known across the province as “Big Mike”—a steady, committed figure whose passion for the sport and its athletes never wavered.

As President of Boxing Ontario, Mike guided the association through key developmental steps, strengthening coaching standards, advancing athlete pathways, and championing the growth of both competitive and recreational boxing. He believed deeply in making the sport accessible and worked to build a more unified, athlete-centred provincial system.
Mike’s longstanding work with Motor City Boxing in Oshawa became a cornerstone of his legacy. Under his guidance, the club developed disciplined, technically skilled athletes who excelled at the provincial and national levels, with several continuing on to successful professional careers. Many credited Mike as a mentor who believed in them early and played a defining role in their development.
Beyond the gym, Mike was widely recognized for his volunteer contributions, including being named Volunteer of the Day at a major multi-sport Games in the Durham Region. His commitment to running events, supporting officials, and creating positive experiences for athletes reflected his belief that boxing was more than competition—it was community.
Mike Power leaves behind a lasting impact on Canadian amateur boxing. His leadership, his coaching, and his dedication to athlete development helped strengthen the sport and the people within it. He will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude by the athletes, coaches, and colleagues whose lives he touched.
