IOC Affirms Boxing’s Integrity and Future in the Olympics

June 22nd, 2023

For Immediate Release

Montreal, Qc – In light of this morning’s decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to expel the International Boxing Association (IBA) from the Olympic Movement, Boxing Canada reaffirms its commitment to our athletes and the integrity of the sport of Boxing.

The expulsion of the IBA from the Olympic Movement is a step that has resulted from deeply concerning behaviours reported of IBA representatives, persistent disputes between the IBA and the IOC, and an ongoing resistance from the IBA to introduce significant reforms to their governance and judging practices. Boxing Canada fully supports any actions that are taken in the best interests of our athletes to support the integrity of our sport and ensure Boxing remains a part of the Olympic Movement.

It is our belief that the IOC’s decision to expel the IBA was the only possible course of action. The reported instances of poor behaviour by IBA representatives are in clear violation of the standards that we believe are necessary for creating a safe and fair sporting environment. Protecting our athletes’ opportunity to compete at the Olympics is one of our primary concerns, and this challenging decision paves the way for the continuation of Boxing’s long and proud history at the Olympic Games.

Our athletes and teams are focussed on continuing their qualification efforts for Paris 2024, through the upcoming Pan Am qualifiers in Cali Columbia. Furthermore, Boxing Canada is delighted by the IOC’s recent announcement confirming Boxing’s continued inclusion in the Olympic program for 2028 in Los Angeles. Boxing Canada is resolutely committed to an Abuse-Free Sport and we stand firm in our resolve to uphold the values of fairness, respect, and sportsmanship. We remain supportive of our athletes and the international boxing community as we navigate through these changing times together.

On behalf of the Board od Directors of Boxing Canada,

Ryan O’Shea

Boxing Canada President
