McKenzie Wright Secures Dominant Victory, Sara Kali Shows Grit in Tough Bout

[Bangkok, Thailand, May 31st, 2024] – As the World Qualifier 2 in Bangkok, Thailand, approaches its crescendo, Canadian boxers McKenzie Wright and Sara Kali have left an indelible mark on the world stage with their performances.

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, McKenzie Wright (City Boxing Club, ON), competing in the 50kg weight division, secured a dominant victory against her opponent from Argentina in her first bout of the tournament. Wright’s exceptional performance, characterized by her speed, precision, and relentless combinations, earned her a unanimous decision victory. Celebrating her birthday with this impressive win, Wright showcased her unwavering focus and determination in the ring.

Head coach Samir lauded Wright’s performance, stating, “It was a fantastic performance by ‘Big Mac’ McKenzie; her focus and mindset were amazing. Her speed, combinations were the key to this unanimous victory. When McKenzie has fun in the ring, her skills are unmatched.” Notably, Wright’s opponent hailed from a professional boxing background, making her victory even more commendable. Wright’s next challenge awaits on June 1st, where she will face her next opponent from Serbia.

Meanwhile, Sara Kali (Boxe Montreal, QC), competing in the 66kg weight division, faced a formidable opponent from Cabo Verde in a hard-fought battle. Despite giving it her all in the ring, Kali fell short, with her opponent securing a unanimous decision victory. Kali’s resilience and determination were evident throughout the match, showcasing her unwavering grit and fighting spirit.

Her personal coach Danielle Bouchard, who is also here to support the team shared ”Sara went into the ring with the full desire to get the win, well prepared and do the job to get it. After losing a close first round, she tried to come back and get the second one. She gave it all and won the last one but that was not enough to get the victory.”

With the tournament nearing its conclusion, June 2nd marks the final day of competition, with two female boxers from Canada vying for their ticket to Paris. Both McKenzie Wright and Scarlett Delgado are still chasing their Olympic dream.
