Before the games Canada traveled to Cali, Colombia earlier in August and competed at the Continental Championships and won 11 medals. Heading to the Pan American Games, the challenge was bigger, but the objective was the same: bring as many medals as possible back home.

In preparation for Santiago, Boxing Canada participated in a 3-week training camp in Bogota, Colombia, along with a number of other nations. This intensive preparation focused on gaining international sparring and optimal acclimatization. Coach Samir El Mais said that, “the quality of the training, free from distractions of home, provided athletes with an optimal preparation environment”. Coach Vincent Auclair added that, “the extreme altitude of the camp, while physiologically challenging, helped Canadian athlete get an edge in physical preparation. Our team was training to be better in every way – tactically, mentally, and physically.”

The results speak for themselves: Boxing Canada won 4 bronze medals (Junior Petanqui, Mckenzie Wright, Charlie Cavanagh, Bryan Colwell), and 2 gold medals (Tammara Thibeault and Wyatt Sanford). On top of the medals, Tammara Thibeault and Wyatt Sanford qualified themselves for the 2024 Olympics.

“Boxing Canada performed amazingly during the Continental Championships in Cali, Colombia, earlier in August. We were confident with the level that we faced in Cali that we could reproduce similar results for the Pan American Games in Santiago. By the end of the training camp in Bogota prior to the games, the athletes felt well prepared and confident and ultimately, this showed in the results.’’ – Kraig Devlin, Boxing Canada’s High Performance Director.

While this was the second time that Thibeault and Colwell competed at the Pan American games, it was a first instance for the rest of the team. Both Thibeault and Sanford were members of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Team. With the ‘’WOW’’ of attending the Olympics out of their systems, both athletes are looking to improve on their performances. Tammara Thibeault will be looking to improve on her 2020 5th place result and stand on the Podium. “I’m excited to step-up in Paris. I’ve won a World Championships title and medals here at the PamAms. Now it’s time to show the world that I can be an Olympic Champion.”

With the PamAm Games tournament concluded the team is looking forward to getting back home. The next opportunity to qualify for Paris 2024 will be at the two upcoming World Qualifiers in Italy (Feb 29th to March 12th) and in Thailand (May 23rd to June 3rd).
