The 2022 edition of the Canadian Championships is cancelled

Considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the numerous restrictions that have been imposed across Canada, the 2022 edition of the Canadian Championships will be cancelled.

The competition was set to take place from March 1-7, 2022, at Centre Peirre-Charbonneau in Montreal. The following reasons have led Boxing Canada to make this difficult decision:

  • COVID-19 restrictions: Indoor sporting competitions are currently prohibited in Québec.
  • Restrictions on sports: Indoor training facilities are currently shut down in various provinces, thus making it difficult for athletes to prepare and for some provinces to hold their qualifying competitions.
  • Safety: The safety of the athletes is of utmost importance to Boxing Canada. A lack of adequate physical preparation for this competition poses a great risk of injuries to participants.
  • Logistics: The National Championships are a major event in Boxing Canada’s calendar, gathering over 200 athletes from across the country. Navigating the current everchanging restrictions continues to be a great challenge, making it nearly impossible to plan ahead. The costs incurred while planning this event and potentially cancelling at a later date pose a great risk.

Given that a National Championship hasn’t been held since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Boxing Canada will outline an alternative athlete selection process to the 2022-23 High Performance Program, ensuring the continuous development of the National Team.
