Thibeault Wins Silver to Lead Canada to Three Top-Eight Finishes at World Boxing Cup
GUIYANG, China – Canada concluded competition at the World Boxing Cup: Stage 2 in Guiyang, China with a silver medal and two additional top-eight finishes, highlighted by an impressive performance from Olympian Tammara Thibeault (Steel City gym, Royaume-Uni, QC).
Competing in the women’s 75 kg division, Thibeault opened her tournament with a victory over India’s Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom before defeating Venezuela’s María Yriza in the quarterfinals and Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal bout. She ultimately earned the silver medal after facing China’s Ziyi Bao in the championship final.
Canada also celebrated quarterfinal appearances from Keoma Al-Ahmadieh (The Corner, QC) in the men’s 60 kg division and Josh Ofori (Marshall Boxing, AB) in the men’s 80 kg division.
Al-Ahmadieh put together an impressive run to the final eight, defeating Mexico’s Harold Santos and Korea’s Jang Donghwan before falling to Brazil’s Luiz Gabriel Oliveira, who went on to claim the silver medal.
Ofori also advanced to the quarterfinals after a strong opening-round performance. His tournament came to an end against Brazil’s Wanderley Pereira, the eventual silver medallist, securing Canada its third top-eight finish of the competition.
The remaining members of Canada’s six-athlete team also competed against deep international fields. Max Tomines (Tomines Boxing, ON) represented Canada in the men’s 54 kg division, Gabriel Aly Labrie (Pound4Pound, QC) competed in the men’s 65 kg division, and Marie Al-Ahmadieh (The Corner, QC) represented Canada in the women’s 60 kg category.
The performances in Guiyang continue Canada’s strong start to the 2026 World Boxing season, with the national team demonstrating its ability to compete with many of the world’s top boxing nations while continuing to build depth across multiple weight categories.
“We’re pleased to leave Guiyang with a medal and two top-eight finishes against an exceptionally strong international field,” said Head Coach Vincent Auclair. “Tammara showed why she is among the world’s elite, while Keoma and Josh demonstrated they can compete with the best in their divisions. The entire team is now focused on preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Continental Championships.”
Christopher Lindsay, Executive director, sees strategy in the next major events. “We have a strong history of success at the Commonwealth Games and the team is ready. But the major focus of this season is on the Continental Championships in Mexico this October. This will be a major test before the Olympic qualification period begins in April 2027. Doing well against our continental peers is critical to qualifying athletes to the 2028 Olympics.”
