Montreal to host the 2020 and 2021 Canadian Boxing Championships

After two editions held in Western Canada, Boxing Canada is proud to announce that the 2020 and 2021 Canadian Championships will be held in Montreal for the first time in its history. Regrouping the Elite, Youth and Junior categories under the same roof, the next two championships are set to take place May 12-17, 2020 and April 19-25, 2021 at Centre Pierre-Charbonneau at the Olympic Park.

With a squared layout and built-in bleachers, Centre Pierre-Charbonneau is designed to host combat sports. Indeed, this venue hosted wrestling during the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games and has since welcomed a variety of competitions, such as many amateur and professional boxing cards, the upcoming 2020 Senior Pan American Judo Championship and many others.

“We are extremely pleased that the Canadian Championships will be held in Montreal after it was held last in the region over 25 years ago,” states Pat Fiacco, Boxing Canada’s President. “Montreal is well-known for its boxing activities, both amateur and professional so it is fitting that our best amateur boxers from all over Canada are able to display their talent in Montreal.”

Over the course of five days of competition, the Canadian championships will showcase eight boxing sessions on two rings and with a variety of workshops and seminars scheduled, the 2020 edition promises to be as exciting as ever on the eve of the new Olympic quadrennial. Since the unification of the age categories in 2016, the championships have received over 235 of Canada’s best boxers yearly competing in the hopes to remain or become Canadian champion in their respective weight category.

Each province and territory will have the opportunity to register up to two male and two female boxers per weight category and age group. Also, all 2019 Elite National Team boxers will be automatically registered in the competition to defend their title, with the exception of the boxers who will participate in the World Olympic Qualification event at the same time.

“Sports Events Montréal, the team at Tourisme Montréal dedicated to developing the sports market, is thrilled to confirm that Montréal has been chosen as host city of the 2020 and 2021 Canadian Boxing Championships for the very first time. Not only does our city enjoy a rich boxing history, but it is also home to the national federation, making it the perfect host for these competitions that showcase the best boxers in Canada. We are confident that the athletes, coaches, support staff and spectators will love Montréal’s joie de vivre and savoir-faire. And we look forward to working closely with our local partners to ensure that all participants enjoy an unforgettable stay here,” affirms Yves Lalumière, Tourisme Montréal’ President and Chief Executive Officer.
